Pedal’s Top 10 Portlandia Places

In honor of today’s first episode of Portlandia, (The 6-part IFC Original short-based comedy series, created, written by and starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (vocalist/guitarist, WILD FLAG, Sleater-Kinney), premieres on IFC) here’s our top 10* places that make Portland such a fun and unique place to raise a chicken!  What did I miss?  What are YOUR top 10 Portlandia places?

1  Hungry Tiger Too– It’s Portlandia for its $1.25 vegan corn dogs and $1 PBRs every Wednesday, famous throughout the city.

2 The Bye & Bye– Portlandia for its great decor in an old auto body shop, super-hipster patrons, tattooed, bearded vegan bartenders and awesome BBQ Tofu platter.  Also it’s the closest bar to my house.

3 The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers– Portlandia for the name alone but also because our very own Miles Craig is in the band.  “The Last Regiment is one of the few remaining syncopated drum corps. It was formed in September 1998 by Greg Odell in the hopes of continuing a style of drumming that incorporates both military style rudiments with “street beat” rhythms.”

4 Dante’s– Portlandia not only for it’s diverse and eclectic show schedule, but more for Sinferno Cabaret- Live Music, Burlesque, Fire Dancing, DJs & Debauchery, strip club upstairs and the mural on the parking lot wall- “Keep Portland Weird”

5 Oblique Coffee Roasters– Portlandia because  it’s “A super bitchin’ Victorian Coffee Mercantile with scrumtrulescent beans micro roasted in an über German cast iron roaster named Bart!”  and they’re on our Coffee Crawl tour.

6 Crystal Ballroom– Portlandia because it’s a 1920’s grand ballroom turned into a music venue with spring-loaded floors, but also holds 2 other separate bars AND has a brewery! (Which is on our OR Brewery Trail tour).

7 Sapphire Hotel– “The Sapphire Hotel was originally a turn of the century seedy hotel in Portland Oregon inhabited by sailors, travelers and ladies of the night. They rented rooms by the week, night or by the hour and spent long days and evenings in the lobby drinking, laughing, eating, talking and kissing.”  Portlandia because although it’s no longer seedy and no longer a hotel the rest is surprisingly similar!

8 The Rebuilding Center– This warehouse of reclaimed building materials is Portlandia because Portlanders remark with pride “I got it at the Rebuilding Center!”

9 Free Geek– Portlandia for the name alone but also because “Free Geek refurbishes technology to provide computers, education and job skills in exchange for community service.”

10 Bike Farm– Portlandia because biking IS Portland and because “Bike Farm is an all volunteer-run collective dedicated to every aspect of bicycle education, from safe commuting to repair. Our mission is to provide a space where people can learn about the bicycle and build community around promoting sustainable transportation. We strive to demystify the bicycle in order to impact the city in a healthy and positive way.”

*Not really the top 10, just some great places I thought up over 5 minutes and presented in no particular order.
