The Best Streetfood IN THE WORLD- Portland, Oregon

US News and World Report's online travel magazine has just come out with their rankings of best food cart cities in world, and guess who came out on top?   The list reads like a dream round the world vacation including Vietnam, Turkey, Mexico, Germany, Morocco, Vietnam, and the good old USA.

Of course I wouldn't be writing this if Portland hadn't made the list, but the really cool thing is PORTLAND WON.  Naturally we who live here take our food carts for granted ( I just had spicy pork ramen from a Korean cart for $5.95), but this is a wake up call to get out and enjoy them even more!  (Maybe I'll have a second lunch.)

Naturally our shop is within a block of several of them, with hundreds more within several more blocks.  And yes, several of our tours either go to carts or pass right by them, including Bites By Bike and  Historic Downtown.

Hats off to the city of Portland for lowering barriers to entry for the small business owners who start these carts, and of course the entrepreneurs themselves who bring us such a lively, delicious, varied and creative cart city!

Free Lunchtime Fitness Rides

No Spandex Required!

You know how everyone’s always talking about how nice it would be to take a bike ride during lunch but they don’t have a bike and don’t know a safe place to ride? Pedal Bicycle Tours, (Tripadvisor’s #1 ranked tour company in Portland)has a fresh air, low intensity alternative to spin classes. Easy paced guided rides go from our downtown shop on one of our comfortable 7 speed city hybrid bikes.  We provide a helmet, even raingear!  Rides go Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 12:00-12:40 and are free!  After your ride a changing room and shower is available at our shop.  Rides feature a variety of distances and routes designed for novice to intermediate riders.  No one is ever left behind on these low-impact rides- a good option for people who haven’t been on a bike for a while (or a decade!) and want to move their body and get some fresh air at an easy pace while enjoying the beauty of Portland, America’s Bicycle Capital!

Our guides are pros at leading people around Portland safely.  Besides the invigorating exercise and cameraderie of group riding, Lunchtime Fitness Rides are a great opportunity to learn how to bike around the city safely and what gear you’ll need to bike through the winter and stay warm and dry.

Since launching just 2 months ago, GO Box now has nearly 200 subscribers

Have you heard of Go Box?  It's a great program which seeks to do away with disposable food containers.  It's simple, for an $8.50 lifetime membership you get a token which you use at a local food cart.  The cart takes your token and gives you your food in a reusable container.  Eat your food, bring the container to a convenient dropoff box (like Pedal!) and receive a new token.  The container is sterilized and returned to the vendor.  Hopefully in a few years/decades the idea of buying food in a container that gets thrown away or worse, dumped somewhere in our beautiful state is an unbelievable horror story told to children.

If you live in Portland and eat downtown, give it a try, if not, soon it will be in a neighborhood near you.

The Daily Commute

Just another day on the daily bike commute!  The Pedal cargo bike comes in handy for all kinds of loads, from a new printer for the office to an entire show booth for Sunday Parkways.  Most days it gets used for my and Holly the shop dog's 3.5 mile commute from NE Portland.  However, today we needed to bring a folding table and chairs to the shop.  No problem for the cargo bike, built by our good friends at Tom's Cargo Bikes, with room to spare for Holly! Since this is Bike Commute Challenge month, do we get extra credit?

New Portland Bike Map And City Guide

New Portland Bike Map And City Guide

The Best Places to Eat, Drink and Enjoy Portland By Bike!

2011-09-01-105646

Pedal Bicycle Tours, (Tripadvisor’s #1 ranked tour company in Portland)is announcing the release of Pedal’s Picks: A map of our guides’ favorite places to eat, drink and explore Portland, the first and only combination bike map and city guide in Portland.

“We found ourselves spending a lot of time writing down recommendations, looking up addresses and drawing all over maps.  So, we decided to save ourselves some time and create our own map,” says Pedal owner and biker-in-chief Todd Roll.

Conveniently grouped by neighborhood, the ad-free map includes over 100 of Pedal’s eight tour guides’ favorite places. The list includes culinary stars like Nostrana as well as bohemian haunts like The Bye and Bye, gems that really highlight Portland’s unique culture and livable neighborhoods.

“The city bike maps do a great job of showing people how to get around, what was missing was where to go.  This map solves that. Now they can experience America’s Bicycle Capital like a local,” adds Roll.

Pedal’s Picks costs $2 and is available at Pedal Bike Tours’ gift shop in Old Town.

Pedal offers sightseeing tours by bicycle of Portland and NW Oregon, bike rentals and a gift shop featuring locally made bike crafts. Tours include Historic Downtown, The Columbia Gorge, Bites By Bike (a culinary tour), Wine Country, The Oregon Coast and Forest Park.
