TOUR DESCRIPTION
This tour will take us from the historic heart of Portland up through the traditional industrial area to a vibrant neighborhood experiencing a renaissance after decades of neglect and mistreatment. We’ll ride along and across the river, then back down the river, enjoying the views of downtown from the Eastbank Esplanade with its floating walkway.
Then we’ll go up the ramp to the Rose Quarter Transit center with its intersection of public transportation, past the Rose Garden where the Trailblazers play and continue up into the Boise neighborhood where late nineteenth century homes await us. Here, above the bluff we’ll find the first examples of the rebirth of the Albina neighborhood as typified by delectable sweets, haute cuisine vegetarian food, a local coffee roaster and a microbrewery.
Next we’ll head over to Mississippi avenue, where another street of 1920’s brick storefronts has been rescued from neglect and transformed into a bustling and often crowded main street. Here we’ll see examples of LEED rated architecture next door to an 1883 mansion, highly imaginative and delicious food carts, another coffee roaster, independent cafes, boutiques, music venues, and the largest building material recycler in the country housed in a building which is itself beautifully built from reclaimed materials.
